Last Updated on March 12, 2024

If you think a BJJ gi is just a uniform worn by pros for competitions, then you’re plain wrong.

As a matter of fact…

Getting a gi is a necessity unless you are only into no-gi BJJ.

Again, a gi is a must-have for every Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner regardless of skill or experience and is in fact, a weapon in BJJ, asides, of course – the skill of fighting.

It is used during fights to help complete grappling moves, which are crucial to winning a Jiu-Jitsu fight.

So if your gi can be grabbed too easily, it can cost you in many fights...

Also, without getting one of the best BJJ gis available, there is a high chance your gi will be very uncomfortable, chafe, and rip easily.

Now...

Getting the best BJJ gi isn’t necessarily a walk in the park. You have to consider that the gi suits the condition of where you train, style, competition standards, among other factors that I’ll discuss later...

But the point is, this can be time-consuming and stressful for many folks.

In this light, I’ve compiled a list of the ten (10) best BJJ gis across different categories for all-inclusive review. Plus, a detailed guide at the end of the review to help you make an informed purchase.

The Top 10 Best BJJ Gis For Training & Competitions - Reviewed

1. Sanabul Essentials V2

Sanabul Essentials V.2 Ultra Light Pre Shrunk BJJ Jiu Jitsu Gi (Black, A2) See Special Sizing Guide

Our Verdict: Best Overall & Best Value

If you are not a newbie to combat sports, then you must have come across a Sanabul product at a point in time. Sanabul is a reputable MMA brand known for producing one of the best products at very affordable prices.

The same can be said about their flagship gi - Sanabul Essentials V2.

It is the most popular gi online and you can be sure it's not just about the brand name but also for functionality and affordability.

The V2 has a simple design to it that isn’t flashy but definitely looks good. If you like, it's available in six different colors, which give a new look all through the week.

The V2 is ultra-light thanks to its single weave design. This makes it breathable in hot summer days and easy for beginners to perfect their moves without discomfort.

Although single weave gis is not the best to hold up to constant use, the V2 can be said to be an exception with its dense fabric. It is further reinforced with rubberized collars, tapered sleeves, and precision fit stitches.

The only issue is that the pants are somewhat flimsy. A few users have complained about its see-through material, but some others don’t bother about it.

The Essentials V2 comes preshrunk so there’s no need to worry about any abrupt change in its size after the first wash. But if you like, it can still be shrunk by washing it in hot water and a dryer.

In regards to sizing, Sanabul has a special sizing chart for their gis. This means that the same sizing you used for a previously owned gi might not fit, so you have to follow their size chart.

All in all, the Sanabul Essentials gi is hands down the best gi for the money. There might be other products that are slightly cheaper, but it offers the most value for a gi within its price range.

Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Ultra-light
  • Durable single weave design
  • Unique sizing chart
  • Precision fit stitching
  • Available in 6 different colors
  • Pre-shrunk fabric
  • Free belt of any color

Cons:

  • Flimsy (see-through) pants

This, coupled with its being lightweight, makes it a good choice for beginners and a backup gi for summer. Plus, if you buy at the right time, you get a free belt of any color.

2. Elite Sports Ultra Light BJJ Gi

Elite Sports BJJ GI for Men IBJJF Kimono BJJ Jiujitsu GIS W/Preshrunk Fabric & Free Belt (See Special Sizing Guide) (Black, Size 1)

Our Verdict: Best Gi for Beginners

Elite Sports is yet another brand known for producing good products at affordable prices, but it’s even more popular than Sanabul.

So, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Elite Sports Ultra Light gi is locking horns with the Sanabul V2 for the best-selling gi.

Its affordability surely plays a key role in its popularity, but it’s definitely also made with quality in mind. That being said, it’s an IBJJF competition standard gi, so you can expect to find all the key features you need to have a great workout.

The Elite Sports gi has an eye-catching design that gets even better when you add its brilliant colors. There are seven (7) different colors to choose from, with the option of pink for ladies.

It is very similar to the Sanabul V2 in terms of its cotton material. It is ultra-light and even has an anti-odor treatment that makes it easy to expel bad smells after sweaty fight sessions. Also, it is pre-shrunk to make sure it has little or no reduction in its size after the first wash.

Unlike Sanabul, the Elite Sports sizing chart is the industry standard. Regardless, a few customers, especially taller folks, have complained about the pants coming up too short.

Pros:

  • Very affordable
  • Ultra-lightweight jacket
  • Anti-odor treatment
  • Free white belt with a stripe bar

Cons:

  • Pants might be undersized for taller persons

Overall, the Elite Sports Ultra-Light gi is the best gi for beginners. It is just as good as most products that are worth double its price. So, it’s the perfect gi for beginners to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training without spending a fortune.

3. Flow Kimonos Air

Our Verdict: Best Lightweight Gi

The Flow Kimonos Air is my pick for the overall best lightweight BJJ gi for training and competitions.

Flow Kimonos is a lesser-known brand trying to make a statement in the gi market and did just that with the Air. It is designed with only minimal logos of Flow in strategic points on the gi.

This makes it possible for you to add stickers of your academy or sponsors as you like.

From its name alone, you can easily decipher that it’s built to be as light as possible. Its jacket is made with an ultra-soft cotton material using a pearl weave design makes it weigh only 350 gsm.

With a pearl weave, you are sure to get a gi that’s not only light but also durable. Even better, the cotton is combed and carded, so it has a pleasing and comfortable feeling on the skin.

As you’d expect from a top-of-the-line gi, its pants are made with breathable and also lightweight, weighing only 80z with ripstop cotton. This means it will dry sweat faster and is also strong enough to prevent ripping from hard rolls.

Plus, its pants use a rare high-density foam drawstring to make sure the pants stay snug on your waist. This gives you the confidence to focus on your fight without the fear of your pants falling.

Another good feature Flow Kimonos made a statement with is their sizing chart. The chart, unlike many others, makes room for users that are short but huge, or tall and lanky to find the right fit.

Also, the gi is preshrunk and will only reduce by as little as 2%. Therefore, it is advisable you don’t try to pick a large-sized gi with the hopes that it will shrink down to your size.

As regards washing, this gi doesn’t retain body stink, and it also dries very fast.

Despite being lightweight, the Flow Kimonos Air is IBJJF compliant. It gives opponents minimal fabric to grab unto than most lightweight gis.

Pros:

  • Lightweight for training in hot weather and competitions
  • 100% pre-shrunk fabric
  • Wide variety of sizes to fit shorter and taller persons
  • Light 8ox ripstop pants with HD foam drawstring
  • Available in white, black, and blue

Cons:

  • A bit pricey

Overall, this is an awesome gi and can be used for training or competition if you are looking for something light and easy to travel around with for competitions. Its pricing is decent, but if you think it’s pricey, you will have a change of heart once you train in them.

4. Fuji Suparaito BJJ Gi

Fuji Suparaito BJJ GI Martial Arts Uniform, Blue, A1

Our Verdict: Best in Aesthetics

The Fuji Suparaito is easily the best lightweight gi but comes next to the Flow Kimonos Air – a less popular brand.

Fuji is a popular BJJ brand, and the Suparaito is just one of its many high-quality products. It is specially made to be as light as possible without compromising durability. Even its name “Suparaito” means “super light” in Japanese.

At first sight, users are startled, and most times it’s usually not for its eye-catching design as it is for its price tag. Yes, this gi is expensive, but you are getting what you pay for.

The aesthetics of the Suparaito is one-of-a-kind with the blue color option, especially, being an eye-pleaser. The “Fuji” logo is imprinted minimally, and the stitching on the gi makes it stand out.

The jacket has a unique pearl weave design that is not only lightweight but very durable. The collar is stiff and reinforced with extra rows of stitching to make sure it doesn’t tear from rough handling by opponents.

Although the collar causes a bit of discomfort on the back of the neck for some users, it breaks in after a few washes.

Next, it comes with triple reinforced ripstop pants. This is a feature that’s unheard of in virtually all other brands. Not to mention that the pants use a strong bungee cord drawstring to stay snug on the waist.

On the flip side, sizing remains an issue a few customers don’t get right. This is, however, a general issue with gis since they aren’t custom made. Also, the gi is pre-shrunk and will not reduce in size from washing them.

Nevertheless, there is a wide range of size options that will fit almost anyone as long as you choose carefully.

The special fabric used in the gi is anti-odor treated and very breathable. So, aside from not having to worry about a permanent stench on your gi, it will also dry fast after a fight to reduce the risk of infections.

Pros:

  • A lightweight design fit for summer, traveling, and competitions
  • Triple reinforced ripstop pants
  • Available in a wide range of sizes
  • Nice design available in three different colors

Cons:

  • Expensive

All in all, the Suparaito is an awesome gi that won’t wear out any time soon despite its very lightweight. This gi is definitely worth it if you’re prepared to pay for a top-class experience.

5. Hayabusa Goorudo 3.0 BJJ Gi

Hayabusa Goorudo 3 Gold Weave Jiu Jitsu Gi - White, A2

Our Verdict: Best BJJ Competition Gi

By now, you should be fully aware of the reputation of Hayabusa as a BJJ brand. If not, Hayabusa is known for making quality MMA gears for optimum performance and safety at reasonable prices.

The Hayabusa Goorudo 3.0 breathes perfection and is constructed with a mix of hand-crafted designs and state-of-the-art materials. This, coupled with its other unique features, makes it a top contender for the best BJJ competition gi.

As you’d expect, all the features and designs incorporated into this gi are compliant with IBJJF standards.

Its design and embroidery are well thought of and of lasting quality.

Along with the brand logo (Hayabusa), it is adorned with a few traditional kanjis that means “courage,” “pride,” “strength,” and “respect” to keep you inspired.

To stay strict to IBJJF rules, it uses the go-to weave design for competitions in its jacket – Gold Weave. More specifically, the jacket is soft and heavy (550gsm), but it’s nothing compared to the weight of most gold weave jackets, which are usually heavier.

On another hand, its special weave makes it thick in such a way that it gets difficult for opponents to grab unto without breaking competition rules.

The pants are 12oz cotton twill with reinforced stitching in stress areas to make it extra durable and non-restrictive.

Although the gi is pre-shrunk, it will see a significant amount of shrinkage if you wash and dry it in a washing machine and dryer.

Note that it’s a gold weave gi, so it will shrink easily once you wash it in hot water or a dryer.

If you were wondering, many experienced BJJ fighters prefer the gold weave gis to newer designs, pearl weave, and ripstop.

Pros:

  • Durable and comfortable 550gsm jacket
  • Reinforced stitching in all stress areas of the jacket and pants
  • Attractive design with inspirational stickers
  • IBJJF approved

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Shrinks easily

The Goorudo 3.0 is a pricey gi, but it’s not a surprise for a product of premium quality. It is what you need if you want to compete with the best quality and of course, without issues with the officials.

6. Fuji All-Around BJJ Gi

FUJI– All-Around BJJ Uniform – BJJ & Jiu Jitsu Gi

Our Verdict: Best in Durability

Fuji has dished out a couple of premium gis over the years, but the Fuji All-Around remains their best-selling product.

The reason is that all its features don’t fall into the extreme end, as well as its price. Also, it is customizable with seven different colors, so anyone can easily find a color they like.

This gi has an almost plain design, which makes it a great choice if you’re the reserved type or have a couple of stickers from your sponsors or team. Unlike most products in this review, the All-Around uses a special weave to give it an optimal weight.

The jacket is thick, with a cotton twill collar that makes it soft, and also doesn’t feel like a burden when worn.

The pants are also made of cotton twill fabric that’s long-lasting and pretty comfortable. The pants use traditional drawstrings, but a few users have said they feel flimsy. However, this seems to be an issue of personal taste.

For premium durability, the stress points that are likely to rip or wear out easily when rolling are reinforced with stitches.

Sizing is a general issue gi brands can’t easily put a stop to unless they take your measurement before making them. But you can easily shrink this gi with a hot wash and machine dry till it fits.

Lastly, as you’d expect from an elite gi, it won’t retain body odor after it’s washed. This feature is important because it will be soaked in sweat most times.

Pros:

  • Durable and soft cotton fabric
  • IBJJF approved
  • Pre-shrunk but can still be shrunk to fit (optional)

Cons:

  • Fairly expensive

Generally, this award-winning gi is well worth its seemingly expensive price tag. It might not be feather-light, but it’s comfortable and sure to go through years of abuse in the gym.

7. Venum Challenger 2.0 BJJ Gi

Our Verdict: Best Gi For Women

Venum is one of the many trusted brands I’ve included in this review. They have produced several top-rated MMA gears and equipment, and they spare no costs in delivering the best products.

Their Venum Challenger 2.0 is one of the few gis specially crafted for women. This means that it isn’t just pink or a smaller size like what most other brands offer.

First off, it has a stylish design that isn’t too girly but is something most women will like. The logo and stickers are inked on the gi in a beautiful calligraphic font with blue dye.

On the other hand, the lining inside the gi is appealing with the way the Venum logo is used as a mini piece of art on the fabric.

The 450gsm pearl weave jacket is a smart feature for women because it’s very soft and light for a gi of its quality.

Also, its twill cotton pants are comfortable and soft on the skin. It uses a strong drawstring to keep the pants up at all times.

The Challenger 2.0 is not only built to fit on a woman’s frame, but it’s also built to last with multiple stitching In all stress areas.

However, many users have complained about the pants being too short, so you might think of ordering a size up. As a result, the jacket will fit loosely, but not in a way that will mess up its functionality.

The size of the Challenger 2.0 is perfect for smaller women who want a smart fit that isn’t going to be baggy like most unisex gis.

Pros:

  • Lightweight gi – very comfortable
  • Tighter fit for women
  • Long-lasting
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • Some users have complained of receiving shorter pants

All in all, the Challenger 2.0 is not the best gi for women because it is unrivaled to other brands. Rather it’s because it features the same good qualities you’ll only find in products above its price range.

8. Elite Sports Ultra Light BJJ Gi For Kids

Our Verdict: Best Gi for Kids

The Elite Sports Ultra Light gi for kids is just the same as their Ultra Light gi for adults except of course, in size.

Like their the main gi, it one of the best selling gis for kids because it is simple and very affordable. If you are looking to raise the next best BJJ athlete without putting a hole in your pocket, this gi will serve your kid well.

It is compliant to all IBJJF rules and regulations, so your kid can use both for training and competitions. Talk about killing two birds with one stone.

With that out of the way, it has a stylish design with stripes and stickers smartly placed on the jacket and pants. Since kids can get picky at times, it comes in all the traditional colors to offer a wide variety of options.

As advertised, the gi is lightweight (400gsm), which is a nice feature for kids. They wouldn’t have to train with discomfort or under intense heat. The jacket has stiff collars that make it not only durable but also harder for opponents to grab unto while rolling.

Also, the gi has an anti-odor treatment that allows it to disperse sweat better and remove body odor after it’s washed. As simple as this feature is, it is very important in preventing infections as well, of which nobody wants for their child.

The fabric is pre-shrunk and will not shrink at all or only a little after the first wash. This is as long as you wash it in cold water and hang dry.

Unless your kid is already a BJJ wizard, the free white belt inclusive in the package is a smart addition from Elite Sports. It even comes with a stripe bar.

Pros:

  • Light and soft fabric
  • Durable
  • Affordable
  • Pre-shrunk
  • Free white belt w/ stripe bar

Cons:

  • Single weave fabric is likely to wear out fast

In my opinion, this is a major contender for the best kids BJJ gi. It is not expensive, so you can comfortably buy several pairs as your kid grows over the years.

9. Shogun Fight Tao BJJ Gi

SHOGUN Fight Jiu Jitsu Gi Tao Premium 450g Pearl Weave Cotton BJJ White, A2

Our Verdict: Best Gi Design

Shogun might not be the most popular BJJ brand, but their elite Tao gi is one of the finest you will find available online.

To begin with, the Shogun Fight gi has a rare rash guard lining that you won’t find in even the most popular premium products. To top it all off, the rash guard doubles as an astonishing piece of art with a colorful painting of the sacred “Tao.”

Surprisingly, the dye used in the rash guard design doesn’t flake or peel. It also fulfills its basic use as it is soft and makes the gi jacket more comfortable to wear.

The gi is available in white, black, and blue, which are all very appealing, regardless of any color you pick.

To meet the standard of premium gis, its jacket is crafted with a lightweight 450gsm pearl weave cotton. The base and inner sleeve cuffs are reinforced with a branded woven tape, which makes it not only stronger but even more appealing.

Furthermore, its pants are made with ripstop cotton fabric, which is the toughest BJJ gi pants material. The six drawstring loops make a pretty sturdy and effective way to keep the pants snug on the waist.

Not to mention that the color combination of the drawstring, stitches, and raging Shogun logo on the pants is a total eye-pleaser.

It is available in a wide range of sizes, and they are all made in compliance with IBJJF competition regulations.

In general, the intelligent mix of style with premium quality in the Shogun Fight gi makes it a top-rated product and easily the best-looking gi in stores.

Pros:

  • Appealing design
  • Lightweight and comfortable
  • Artistic inner rash guard
  • Durable ripstop pants with drawstring
  • Available in three color options – white, blue, and black
  • Fit for use in IBJJF competitions
  • Precise sizing

Cons:

  • Expensive

However, as you might already know, you will pay much more money for a top-quality product like this one. In this case, it is one of the most expensive gis online.

10. Your Jiu-Jitsu Gear BJJ Gi

Your Jiu Jitsu Gear Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Premium 450 Uniform White A3 Free Belt

Our Verdict: Best Selling

Your Jiu-Jitsu Gear is a relative newcomer in the BJJ industry, and they sell virtually all things Jiu-Jitsu. From gis, customize t-shirts, to replacement drawstrings for gi pants.

That being said, this gi is their best-selling product, which is why it has made this list of top Jiu-Jitsu gis for its bold statement in the market as a newcomer.

The first noticeable feature of this gi is its appearance.

It has a completely plain design that allows you to add patches or stickers of your academy or sponsor anywhere you like. However, some folks who have no affiliations or stickers might find its design too plain and boring.

If it helps, it has seven color variations, with its black and white also available in contrast options.

Made by a veteran Jiu-Jitsu specialist, the Your Jiu-Jitsu Gear gi offers all the basic features needed and is available in 450gsm (premium) and 350gsm (light) fabric.

Both weight options are made to last with rubberized collars and reinforced stitching to prevent it from ripping easily.

Also, it's cotton pants are tough and sure to stand the test of time under intense use. Like most gis, it uses a stretch drawstring to keep the pants from falling.

Unlike other popularly sold gis though, this gi usually arrives in the expected size orders and fits almost perfectly.

Since it’s 100% cotton, it can continue to shrink, even though it is pre-shrunk. This means you can easily shrink it for a smarter fit if you like.

As a bonus, the gi comes with a free BJJ white belt.

Pros:

  • Very affordable
  • Plain design to make room for extra stickers
  • Available in premium and light (450gsm and 350gsm)
  • Free white BJJ belt

Cons:

  • Its pants are too baggy for a few users

Overall, this gi will easily pass as the best budget BJJ gi only in close competition with the Sanabul and Elite Sports gi. And based on your preference, you can choose either the light or premium fabric.

male and femaile BJJ fighters wearing Gi

Choosing The Best BJJ Gi

In choosing the best clothing to wear for martial arts, one of the key factors being looked at is comfort and style which is equally important not only in BJJ Gis but even with outfits for other types of martial arts sports, like mixed martial arts shorts and even kickboxing.

So here are some helpful tips to guide you through that...

Weave Design and GSM

If you’ve had a look around the BJJ gi market a bit, then you probably must have seen the term “gsm” flying around.

The gsm is basically the weight of the fabric, and it is mostly determined by its weave design and manufacturer.

Now, there are several types of weave designs with varying durability and weight. If you are getting a gi for the first time, it is very important that you know what the different weave designs are.

Single Weave

Single weave gis is typically used in beginner gis because they are lightweight and inexpensive.

While they might be good for use in hot weather and light training, they are not the best for competitions.

This is because the light material usually fits loosely, which makes it easier for opponents to grab unto for moves that could have been avoided. Besides, the material is the least durable of all the weaves.

This type of gis usually weighs between 350-550gsm.

Double Weave

It's basically two times heavier than the single weave gi. In other words, it uses twice as much fabric in weaving the gi, which, consequently, makes it heavier and more expensive.

Although gis with double weave lasts longer than single weave designs, they tend to be abrasive on the skin and restrictive. It also retains heat more, which can be very discomforting.

As a result, gis with double weave isn’t popular anymore.

These types of gis usually weigh between 550 and well over and 1000gsm.

Gold Weave

For a long time, this used to be the go-to weave design for competition and training because it is light and yet, also lasts long.

Basically, it combines the good in the single and double weave design to make a premium weave design.

However, since its 100% cotton, it tends to shrink a lot from washing.

Nevertheless, some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighters still prefer training in them.

Pearl Weave

This is currently the most popular weave design in the market.

It forms little pearl shapes or bumps across the fabric, hence its name  -Pear Weave.

The main reason for its prominence is that it can be used to produce an ultra-light gi and still remain very strong and long-lasting.

This means you can fight in competitions with a lightweight gi that won’t compromise your performance.

This type of weave design is usually found in premium gis.

Ripstop

This type of weaving is mainly used in gi pants and uses a special seam reinforcement technique. In the end, it is usually very light but resistant to ripping and tearing.

Sizing

This is a very important factor to consider if you are looking for the best BJJ gi.

If a gi fits too loosely, it will be an advantage for your opponents. Meanwhile, if it fits too tight, then it will be hard to roll in.

That’s why it’s very important you carefully access the manufacturers sizing chart after taking your measurements.

A perfectly fitted gi should end below your wrists, and the pants should end on top of your ankle. If it’s your style, you can opt for a longer fit because most gis will shrink considerably after the first wash.

Pre-Shrunk and Shrunk-to-Fit

If you didn’t know already, a pre-shrunk gi means it has been washed by the manufacturer to prevent it from shrinking or only a little when you wash it.

Shrunk-to-fit gis is not pre-washed, so they’ll shrink significantly from washing until it fits your preferred size.

Most gis comes pre-shrunk, so this shouldn’t be an issue. Well, as long as you don’t wash it in cold water and hang dry.

IBJJF Compliant

The IBJJF has set certain standards that every gi must pass for it to be eligible for use in any competition.

The most prominent one is that the gi must not be 5cm above the wrists or ankles.

Also, the only accepted kimono colors are black, white, and royal blue.

That being said, always confirm from the manufacturer or on their product page if the gi you want to buy is IBJJF compliant.

Pricing

If you are looking for a top-rated gi, you must be prepared to spend more money, which shouldn’t come as a surprise to you.

The same thing goes with the top gi brands. Their products are costly because they’ve mastered the trade over the years, and their expertise is definitely worth paying a bit extra.

In any case, an expensive gi doesn’t necessarily mean it will be the best quality or deal. A less expensive product might offer just about the same value as the overpriced one.

Not to worry.

I’ve included the best BJJ gis for the money from trusted brands in this review.

I bet at this point you've already made up your mind which BJJ Gi is best for you. And to follow through all that, you can also take your pick on which set of Muay Thai gloves is best to go with that in a separate review that we prepared for you.

Conclusion

By now, you must already have a clue about how to find the best BJJ gi you can use for training or competing under any condition.

The same way, you should have found one that perfectly suits you in best the BJJ gi review. From lightweight gis to gi for kids, I’m sure you will find one that pleases your fancy.

Nevertheless, I’ll recommend my overall best BJJ gi for fighting if you find yourself in an indecisive position.

The Sanabul Essentials V2  is an ultralight gi that’s fit for use in training and even competitions.

Its special pearl weave and ripstop design make it a very durable gi, despite its lightweight. Plus, it is available in all IBJJF approved colors and in line with the measurement specifications.
